1871 census results states that my relative, at the age of 16, in the Rank,Profession Occupation column was 'Carter'....any ideas what that is....
Thanks

Exactly what it says - the operated carts!

Carman/Charman/Carrier/
Carter/Cartman - Driver of (horse-drawn) vehicles for transporting goods. Carmen were often employed by railway companies for local deliveries and collections of goods and parcels. Modern day van driver. Also sometimes someone who drove horse-drawn trams was called a Carman.

Someone who drives carts, I'd guess. Or maybe owns his own. The census will also say whether he's 'employed' or 'own account', ie works for himself. (Or herself!)

You beat me to it, Sam!
