Fanny by Gaslight

Fanny by Gaslight Report 13 Sep 2007 13:27

Hear hear Kath, my family tree took off dramatically when I relented and bought a subscription to Ancestry.co.uk. It has definately been worth the money and when it expired and I went to findmypast (although they have other lookups, they don't have all the census) I was dissapointed and will be going back to Ancestry when it expires.

If I were you I wouldn't pay for credits on GR. You'd be much better off using your money for a subscription to Ancestry. You will get all the available census records, all the BMD indexes and much, much more.

I couldn't have done most of my family history without it.

GR haven't got it because they can't squeeze any money out of you for looking at it..............

I'm intrigued to know what makes you think there wasn't an 1881 census................

1881 census is completely free on Ancestry....or on the LDS website

Go to www.familysearch.org

You can search to your heart's content............

Censuses are available for all years from 1841 to 1901.............all except 1881 require payment to access.

Huia Report 13 Sep 2007 11:15

There was a census in 1881. It is on microfiche if you go to the LDS, or I think you can order the film of the original from them.

Caron Report 13 Sep 2007 11:14

I am new to this...! I presume there was no census for 1881...which is a real shame...was anything else done that year...and does anyone know why it wasn't done...
