Hi Alison, I cannot find a definate answer, but it does appear to be connected to the textile industry, so could be a yarn winder.
This is a good site, but unfortunately does not list it.

Could it in fact be Silverer?

My husband has just seen it on a sign in Hebden Bridge. That's what he questioned. Whether it was a spelling mistake.

The first machine in making yarn is the carding machine and I am almost sure that I've heard hubby refer to a "sliver" of fibre when it is passing through that machine.

Whether there was ever anyone called a sliverer I have no idea but will ask him when he gets home.

Thanks Christine. I did see a website referring to a worsted sliverer but it gave no definition. See what hubby says...

Hi Alison,

My husband agrees with Colin's description but he has never heard of anyone being called a sliverer.
