I use google all the time as suggested to Newbies .my tip is to use google IMAGES i have found lots of pictures & photos of towns ,places & churches etc to do with my ancesters. Its worth a look.

Thanks Tracey, I do use google a lot but have never thought to use google images !

Try Google maps as well - you can get a satelite image of anywhere you want to look at - and if you click on "hybrid" you get the names of streets in the area too. It's great for giving a general feel for what an area is like.
