Oh well here I was hoping she needed some kind of alias because of her colourful past or something. Mind you changing her name from Welch to Welsh isn't that cryptic an alias!

That maybe the case. The informant was a daughter of hers though, but I suppose she may not have been literate?

Thanks for the very quick reply.

Hello there,

Not sure if anyone can help. I have today received my gg grandmother's death certificate. In the column where her name is, the registrar has written "Alice Eliza Welch otherwise Welsh".

This is the first time I have come across an alternate surname given. Her maiden name was Penfold and there is no mention of Welsh on her marriage certificate nor her daughter's birth certificate. To my knowledge she was never married more than the once.

Is this just evidence that sometimes she used the name Welsh or would there be another reason for the alternate surname?

At least I may have found another way of locating her on census records now!

Thanks in Advance

Sarah
