Paddington and Wembley are both in NW London. Paddigton is fairly central - it's about 1 m from Marble Arch/Hyde Park to Paddigton Station. Wembley Stadium is a further 5 m NW.
Wembley now forms the N half of Brent (with Willesden being the S half). To the SW of Wembley is Ealing, and to the E is Hendon (now part of Barnet). NW of Wembley is Harrow, and in 1881 Wembley was in the census district of Harrow on the Hill. Willesden and Paddington (now part of Westminster) are adjacent. Cranford is out by Heathrow airport.
As you can infer from your census returns, this far out of London was pretty rural back then. Wembley didn't really start getting built up until the 1920s/30s, and the availability of open land influenced the choice of Wembley for the Stadium's location (opened 1923, I think - in any case 1923 was the first FA Cup @ Wembley).

Just out of interest, I looked for Walter Groves pob=Wembley in 1881 MDX - I didn't find him, but I did find some other Groves: (Alperton is in the SW corner of the 1950s Wembley borough, but it was probably thought of as seperate back then.)

Don't know if this helps.
I found a Walter Groves in 1901 living in Wembley, born in Preston, Middx (which is very near Wembley). Only trouble is he was 15 (b. c1886).
Are you sure about the 1890?
