There is a Robert Bogan death in Lewisham in 1939. Do you think this is the same Robert Bogan from the 1919 marriage?
If so, he is 67 at death which roughly ties in with a Robert Bogan in the censuses from East Stonehouse in Devon. Does that ring any bells?

Hi Carol,

Bernard Joseph Bogan is in the deaths index for 1984 in Bexley. You could get the cert and see who registered it.
Perhaps he is buried in Bexley; could be a gravestone.

A New Cathedral

Disaster came during the massive air-raids on London during World War 11. On 16 April 1941 an incendiary bomb set light to the roof and in minutes the cathedral was ablaze from end to end, to become the next day a smouldering ruin. For some years the Amigo Hall became the pro-cathedral.

In the early 1950s, under Bishop Cowderoy and Administrator Fr Bernard Bogan, plans for a new cathedral were completed. Romilly Bernard Craze was chosen as the architect. It was only when restoration work commenced in 1953 that the full extent of the fire damage became apparent. Only a few parts of the original building were sound enough to be incorporated in the reconstructed cathedral. In the reconstruction, a clerestory over the nave was introduced, vastly improving the lighting of the new building.

A grant came from the War Damage Commission, but extra money was needed as the plan went beyond mere restoration. Appeals were made far beyond the diocese, notably in Ireland and the USA. On 4 July 1958 the new building was solemnly opened by Bishop Cowderoy. The Lady Chapel was added in 1963 and the Baptistry in 1966. Click here for a plan of the new cathedral.

In 1994 the cathedral's centenary was marked by a weekend of celebrations involving the Papal Nuncio, the Archbishop of Southwark and more than 40 priests who had served the cathedral over the years.

Hi Carol,
Just a couple of thoughts.
Is there a newspaper article about the murder which might contain some family info?
Have you tried following the Bogan-La Roche couple forwards to see if you can find a living relative you could contact?
Good luck,

I have sent an email to St George's but they might only be able to give me a church record.

My susannah lived in Fort Road, Bermondsey and the Annie who married Robert Bogan above lived in St. James's Road Bermondsey so these two could be somehow related.

My Father died in 1974, he told me he had a relative/uncle/cousin who was a Fr Bernard Bogan at St George's Cathedral, I have looked on google and found his name mentioned as joining in 1949 as an administrator!
I want to know how we are connected, I have found a Bernard Joseph Bogan born 1904 in Lewisham and this would tie in ok, have also found a Robert Bogan married a La roche in lewisham in 1919, Laroche was the name (single) of my dad's grandmother (Susannah Laroche b 1866) who bought him up fom age 2years, when my dad's mum was found murdered. Where to next!!
please any help would be great.
