Thanks Tom. I sort of guessed that I wouldn't really get anywhere but felt I should atleast put out a plea on their behalf.

Hi, I know this is going to be a long shot but need any help/ideas on where to start.

A dear friend is desperate to trace her father's real surname. He was born during the war,in Okehampton, whilst his mother's husband was away fighting. All he knows is that his father was a GI based somewhere near Okehampton .He has always wanted to find his true surname - nothing else behind this, just a desire to know the name. He has 'father unknown' on his birth certificate.

Obviously this is the proverbial needle in a haystack but any websites etc for American bases or Mothers Homes and general information on where to start will be gratefully received.

Many,many thanks.
