Hi Everyone,

I can't find my gggrandfather's first marriage. I have his second to Harriet Bould, nee Merricks in 1886 2nd quarter, where it states he is a widower. On the census of 1881, he is in Birmingham living with Harriet, it says he is born in Herefordshire, which he was not as he was born in Lambourne in Essex. I cannot place him on the 1871 , 1861 or 1851 or 1841. His parents were James and Sarah Groves.

He has a son in 1873/1874 born on the 8th January, He was called George Alfred on the census and I cannot place his birth either!! It says he was born in London

Any ideas?

If you cannot find him on any earlier census than the 1881 then how do you no he was born Lambourne Essex and not Herefordshire

Victoria, If you have a birth cert for him but no other record untill 1881 census, then the second marriage cert, are you 100% sure that you have got the correct birth cert?

Hi Roy,

Yes Roy, I thought it might be him on the 1851 but was not overly sure, I would have been happier if I could place him later. Sarah Groves marries a Mr White and I can place her and Charles and Henry on the 1861 but not William.

And yes I am sure I have the correct birth certificate. I had all the details written down by a very old relative of mine years ago and when we cleared out her house we found it. She left details of birth dates etc. The birth date matches perfectly. So I am in no doubt at all.

Sorry about the delay, children restless!

There are quite a few George Groves in Lambourne born 1838-1842. I was only checking the Herefordshrie enteries originally and I could not place him. Then we came across the paperwork from my great aunt. Bless her she had written down all the birth dates and the deaths.

Thank you Andy will have a good look and what you have given me and to Jan, will send off for that certificate. I know the date he was born just the year is a query!
