Hi All

Have just received my great grandmothers marriage cert. and she got married at Birmingham Register Office in March 1913.

How would I find where it was located at that time, I know it was at 6-14 Edmund Street 1932-1962 but can't find it prior to that.

Many thanks in advance

Kaz ;o))

Have you tried phoning the present day register office and asking them? They must have some sort of records about where they used to be situated.

Other than that, old telephone directories at the library or record office.

Thanks Kathleen and Wendy

Congreve Street sounds a good place to start - Have just found out that B'ham register office now has their own resident genealogist - so will try that route as well.

To be honest I was a bit surprised she got married in a registry office as I know it wasn't very common then.

Thanks again both.

It was more common than you would think to marry in a registry office. There have been registry office marriages since the start of registration in 1837.

Thanks Jet - will go see!

Kathleen, I didn't realise it was quite common because is the first I have come across in my research and I know she was a religious person. Raises a few questions and now I am wondering lol

Perhaps she married someone of a different religion and it was the easiest option.

Kathleen

No my grt grandfather was not a different religion. They were both from Shropshire but am not sure when they moved to Birmingham as was after 1901-- he an Iron Moulder and she was in domestic service, did they elope? Was she with child? or could they not afford a white wedding?

Perhaps I will never know

What were their ages on the marriage certificate? If they were under 21 and didn't have parental consent, then it might be easier to tell a little white lie to the registrar, rather than the local vicar or priest who probably knew them if they were religious.

Thanks again Jet.

Kathleen ages were 24 and 26 and have both birth cert's she was born 1888 and he was born 1886 so would be right for them both as before their birthdays that year!

Hmmmmmmm

Was he perhaps in the army? It was not long before World War One, so perhaps it was a quick marriage before he was sent off to war.

Just trying to come up with reasons - thinking out loud really.
