1901 census - brick wall

Hi,

I am trying to locate my gg grandparents on the 1901 census:

Daniel Dowsett born 1836 in Lanarkshire Scotland
Elizabeth Dowsett born 1842 in Lanarkshire Scotland

Daniel was a seaman in the Merchant Navy so it has been touch and go whether I can find him in the previous census records, however in 1891 he is listed as living with Elizabeth at 25 Martin Road, West Ham, Essex occupation dock labourer.

Elizabeth Dowsett has been living in West Ham since the 1881 census so I believe she would probably still be in West Ham for the 1901 census as this is where the Dowsett family settled.

The only child I know they had is John Edward Dowsett born 1864 in Scotland. I have him on the 1901 census living in West Ham with his family.

I considered that they could both have died but I can't find them in the death index's either for the period between 1891 - 1901.

A fresh pair of eyes on the situation would be very much appreciated.

Thank you

Sarah

Could they possibly have gone back to Scotland for their last years?

You could see if anyone has access to the Scottish site.

Just an idea

Thanks Victoria for that, I have ordered the certificate to see if it is the correct one.

I have access to the Scottish census and have checked on there but no joy either.

It's really annoying not being able to tie up a loose end - I'm quite stubborn when it comes to finding everything out!

Thanks Again

Hi,

I think this is most probably them on the 1901 census.

They are in Adamson Road which is a couple of road's away from where they were in 1891 and I knew that in 1891 Daniel's birthplace was wrong but couldn't remember what it was. I just checked and it's Hounslow, Middlesex.

Did a quick check for Dan(iel) Dowsell's in the other census's plus looked for his birth and he's not there so I'm almost positive that this is my Daniel Dowsett.

Thank you so much for your help I'm sure I wouldn't have found them on my own!
