Quick question. Is there any was I can see the info on a birth cert without buying it? Think I know the answer but it's worth a try. Also how can I ensure I get the right one? I know his name and his Fathers but not his Mother or where he was born.

quick answer is NO. unless !! its Medway area of Kent where there are many records and scanned certs on City Ark website. you wont see the cert but you may find a baptism

When you order the cert from GRO you tick checkpoint on the page you give the ref on and then on the next page you can state the dads name. if it doesn't match then they will send you a refund of £4. you have to specify you want a checkpoint tho .not just add the dads name to the info .

No, if it's in England or Wales you can't see the details without buying the certificate.

If it's before 1901 you can look for the family in the 1901 census, or if it's after 1911 the mother's maiden name will be in the index. Between those two dates, it's difficult.

You never know your luck! Look on the BMDshare.com site, its a site for putting all your certificates on to share with others, there are over 10,000 on there to date.

thanks for that. I he was born after 1901 and i can't find hid Father on the census because I don't know how all he is or where he was living. What a trouble these families can be!
I had a feeling there was no cheap way round this one other than waiting for the 1911 census. Will just have to grit my teeth and open my purse.
