This would make sense as he was licensed around the age of 14 and when he was 16 in 1881 was working as a printing machinist - they had their own print shop there.

Much like Griff Rhys Jones last night on Who Do You Think You Are, his mother was widowed when he was six years old. She had then 6 children and one on the way and was destitute. He went into the NCH 4 years later after being charged at Wandsworth with being uncontrollable. His mother was a mangler and small shop keeper earning 12/-.

I'm not sure whether children's homes were the same as industrial schools, but when a child was in an industrial school they could be sent out into employment or into an apprenticeship and they would be sent out "on licence".

I'm not sure but I would imagine that it meant they were still under the authority of the school while they were doing these jobs.

Alison, all I can suggest is that you get in touch with the local history assoc. for the area of the children's home. They may know.

I have the admittance entry for my g grandfather to a childrens' home in 1875 when he was 10 years old.

Under the heading Disposed: some have a discharge date.

Under his heading Disposed: it says "Licensed 3.11.1879".

Any ideas what this would refer to?
