I am trying to trace my fathers family but the only information I have is that his name is Trevor Christie b. 9.12.1943 in Stamford Lincs. My grandparents are James Christie b. 15.9.19 and Audrey Kent b. 26.1.1923 but I have no idea where they were born. Where do I go from here?

This looks like James's birth reference:-

James Christie, mother's maiden name Amiers
Sept. qtr. 1919, W.Ham, 4a, 198

If you buy this birth certificate it will tell you where he was born and the full names of his parents and then you can look for them in the 1901 census.

The Audrey M. Kent that Brenda found was the nearest I could find too, but since the birth is in Stamford - the same as your father - I would think it's probably the right one.

First of all have a look at the treads pinned to the top of the board, which have lots of useful tips.

What you need to do is to work backwards, ordering certificates as you go. Your parents birth certificates give you the names of their parents. You then find their marriage certificate which gives the names of their fathers and their approx ages, then you look for their birth certificates, and so on.

If you are nor sure about anything, just ask on here - someone will always help.

Why would entry for Audrey Kent be in 1st qtr 1922 if she wasnt born till 1923?

If the birth we have found is the right one then she was born 1922. There is no birth entry in the first qtr. of 1923 for an Audrey Kent. People often make mistakes about when someone was born.

This may sound silly but if I order a birth certificate for Audrey Kent b 1922 how can I cross reference this to be sure that this is the same person given that I have no reason to think the date of birth I have was not correct? Also do the birth records you look at cover Scotland as well?

If you order the marriage certificate first for Audrey Kent and James Christie (which does have Audrey M. Kent as the name) then you will get her father's name on that (unless she was illegitimate).

Then when you order the birth certificate for her, you can give her father's name as a checking point to make sure it's the right one.

However, given that the marriage reference gives her with the initial M. as a middle name, I would think the 1922 birth is correct.

You would need credits for the ScotlandsPeople website for Scottish births. Ancestry (which is the site most people use for look-ups only covers England and Wales.

Do you know when Audrey Christie died as you could double check the birth details from there, however these details are only as good as the person who registered the death. My great aunt is down as being born in 1908 on her death certificate but she was actually born in 1909, my dad said the wrong year!! Or is she still alive?

Best Wishes

Jane

I think she may still be alive.
