Hi all.

My 3x great grandfather George Hampshire born 1842 in Brotherton is listed on the 1871 census as being master of a vessel.
That vessel is the Hiram - poss Hiram 2 - there are no other crew members listed on the ship. Yet there are 93 prisoners.

Have looked for records of the ship online but not really sure where to look.

Could he have been transporting the prisoners abroad?
If so where?
Did he own the ship?
Why in 1881 was he a mere Waterman of a barge?

Where was the ship? Could it have been a static prison ship not one that was used to transport prisoners?

My immediate thought was that it was a Hulk Ship...A ship used as a floating prison.

However most Hulk Ships were decommissioned in the mid-1800s
