He is on 1891 census with wife maria. Living at 53 Adam street, Middlesbrough

Walter age 3 (my grandfather) who was actually christened Thomas Adams Walter Thornton, born out of wedlock in Byfield, Northamptonshire

William age 1 ( who died very young)

I have attached copy of census:-

Also living at no 59 could be another Sands family, although research elsewhere indicates that this was transcribed as Scarr.
However, there are two people living at that address, Ruth and Mary who my grandfather always thought were his sisters but I believe they could be cousins and I have actually met these two when I was about 7 or 8.

What do you think

What are the children's names and when were they born?

Hi John,

This is a possibility re the age but I don't know why he would be in Birmingham!

Death Index
SANDS William 53 Birmingham.6d 96 4 1912

Can you just confirm you have found his birth registration? And did he have a middle name?

Best Wishes

I've got him listed and accurately identified on the 1901 census as:
William Sands age 42 living at 16 Olive Street Middlesbrough and registered as a Boarder. He was born in (H)openshaw Manchester in 1859.

On some records it is spelt with an "H" and on some, not.

I have traced him backwards quite easily.

In 1895 his wife Maria died, and my grandfather and siblings were taken in by others. I cannot find them on any census in 1901. It looks as though William went off on his own way, probably that was what happened then without any social services around.

If anyone can trace him after 1901 I would be most grateful

If he had any sons involved in WW1 then you might find mention of them (and thereby mention of your G Gdad) either at the Commonwealth War Graves Commision site which is free online (thats if they died) or if they survived they may be mentioned in the WW1 Army Pensions records which are available to Ancestry Users.
I noticed this morning that my local library (and therefore probably many others) has an Ancestry account (Library version) - seems to be useable only in the Library itself.

It is difficult. You need to find the last time you knew for certain that he was alive, like on the census or the birth of his last child or when he was a witness at a wedding.

Then you need to start looking for deaths, unless you can get to a Records Office and find him on an old electoral roll, or in an historical directory.
