I couldn't find the family in 1861 - Harriett would have been a few days old, perhaps the census wasn't important to them!

\this looks like the family in 1871, mistranscribed - George is a mat maker. Address is 14 Russell Place. Image looks like Kidd to me!

I found my ggrandparents John and Harriett Briley (she was Kidd before marriage) in the 1901 census. I got lots of helpful information about them and their nine sons (including my granddad Robert Briley c1900). John was a fish curer by trade.

They lived at 29, Haymerle Street in Camberwell in 1901.

Harriett was born c1860 in Rotherhythe, London. I may have found her Birth 1861 2nd Q Rotherhythe, London Vol 1d page 536 (need to send for cert to be sure)..

I then found their marriage certificate for Feb 9th 1880 at St Johns Church in the parish of St Johns, Walworth, London. The couple were living at 7, Poplar Row, Walworth.
I have the certificate. Her father's name was George Kidd and he was a Mat maker.

But I cannot find Harriett, or her father on any other census. I have searched and searched.

I have found a census return for 1891 for a couple called John and Elizabeth Briley who lived at 39, Westcott Street in Southwark. They had five children at this time four boys and a baby girl - Sarah. Poor little Sarah died shortly after the census - I have her death cert but it only gives dad's name - John Briley. John was a dock labourer at this time.

Now here's the thing -

John and Elizabeth's four sons names and dates of birth fit the names and dates of birth of John and Harriett first four sons.

Does it seem likely that she would marry as Harriett Kidd and then use the forename Elizabeth for a while and then change back to Harriett again in time for the 1901 census?

Or have I just got two different families and some coincidences?

I am off tomorrow for a week, and may not have access to a computer in that time.
But I would go off a happy woman if some kind person on this site can find even a scrap of info on Harriett so that I can continue my search on my return.
