Hi all
I recently obtained my 2xgreat gramd ma's birth certificate to find her parents names ,but to my anoyance,I was unable to read her mothers maiden name.so I obtained her sisters birth certificate, but this was written by the same registrar with an equally unreadable mothers maiden name.I have now sent for the marriage certificate of the parents ,hoping this is a different registrar with better hand writing.

Do you think if I called the GRO they would be able to help any?

I have ordered the marriage certificate of my 2x great grand ma's parents to see if it will give up the secret.
But the £££ are mounting up now.Are the GRO able to help with this sort of thing ?

Yes, if you get in touch with them by phone and tell them you can't read the name they will probably ask you to send the certificate back and they will try to do a better copy. If they can't do this but they can read it themselves (which they are quite good at) then they will write a copy out for you.

If you do send the copy back to them I would make a copy of it first just in case it goes missing.

If you can scan the certificate and send it by email, I'll have a look at it for you. Just let me know if you can and if so I'll send my email address.

Simon,

If you've ordered the marriage cert, what was the name on that? Or was she married before?

Hi Rose

Yes I am recon her mother was married before.

My 2x great grand ma was Sarah Small born 5th dec 1842 Wednesbury reg West Bromwich - parents John small & Esther Small formerly ?????

but I recon she was previously married as Esther Walmsby.I need her maiden name.John Small & Esther Walmsby were married in 1840 AMJ Walsall Staffs. It is certainly not walmsby that appears on my Sarah's birth cert as the mothers former name

Simon,

I think they married before 1840.

Emma was born in 1839 and Mercy was born 1837/1838. I found Mercy on IGI.

There is a marriage for John Small and Esther BETTS in the IGI which may be helpful:

JOHN SMALL
Marriages:
Spouse: ESTHER BETTS
Marriage: 22 DEC 1828 Tipton, Stafford, England
