Hi
I dont know if I can ask this as I am new to all of this. I am having problems finding out anything about a Herbert William Simpson that I can be sure is the Herbert William Simpson I want to know about.
I am hoping that someone may be able to do an electoral roll search for me.
I know his address in 1937 was 14 Huntsworth Terrace St Marylebone, London. I would like to know how long he was there before that date (the address does not come up on the 1901 census) and how long he was there after 1937.
I dont know what the electoral roll information gives but a date of birth or age would be useful. I think in 1937 he may have been in his 40's (my guess) I cannot prove this. In 1937 my mothers mother died at this address (the link I am sure about)and although he is named on my mothers birth certificate as the father, and on her mothers death certificate he is named as her employer (she was his housekeeper). I would also be pleased to know if anyone elses name and age appears on the electoral roll, throughout the years he is there..
My mother was born at this address, her mother was Mary Veronica Diemer, she had 4 children, all registered in the name of Simpson, but they never married. I think he may have already been married and could not divorce???????
I dont know if I am asking too much, but would be pleased of any help someone could give me, a look up would be great if anyone can do it. My mum is now 73 years old and we need some closure on who her father was. A date of birth/age with a reference to 14 Huntsworth Terrace would be great. If I know the last date he was at the house it may link in with a date of death. Grasping at straws!!!!.
A big thankyou to anyone who can help.
Kind regards Tina

The ER will only record the names of people in the house eligible to vote (over 21)...........no other info.

And bear in mind that no ER's were taken during WW2.

Just some theorizing ...

All the events below take place within very close proximity of one another, and all fit with the person you're looking for. Of course, they *could* all relate to three different people, none of whom is yours!

A birth:

Name: Herbert William Simpson
Year of Registration: 1892
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Marylebone (1837-1901)
County: London, Middlesex
Volume: 1a
Page: 611

-- would make him 45ish in 1937.

A 1901 census entry:

Name: Herbert W Simpson
Age: 8
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1893
Relation: Son
Father's Name: John W
Mother's Name: Jessie
Gender: Male
Where born: Marylebone, London, England
Civil Parish: Paddington
Town: St Andrew
County/Island: London
Country: England
Registration district: Paddington
Sub-registration district: St Mary, Paddington
ED, institution, or vessel: 37
Household schedule number: 231

Address: looks like 19 Kensal Road. Google Maps shows that in an area called Ladbroke Grove, which is about two miles from a street called Huntsworth Mews.

Household Members: Name Age
John W Simpson 39
- mattress manufacturer (age is actually 29, not 39)
Jessie Simpson 26
Arthur J Simpson 6 weeks
Herbert W Simpson 8
Ruby G Simpson 5
Sidney G Simpson 3
Walter C Simpson 6

-- fits with the birth record.

In 1891 John is a commercial clerk, and he and Jessie have a baby. The address looks like 49 St James St (in both years the address seems to be a multi-family building). No, it's Great James St, which is about as far east of the present-day Huntsworth Mews as Kensal Road is west of it.

On the possibility of a prior marriage:

Name: Herbert William Simpson
Year of Registration: 1909
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Paddington
County: Greater London, London, Middlesex
Volume: 1a
Page: 25

-- brides on page:
Mabel Osborne
Charlotte Payne

The data fit, and I just submit them for your consideration!

edited to add just a bit more:

Name: John William Simpson + Jessie Murrell on same page
Year of Registration: 1890
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Marylebone (1837-1901)
County: London, Middlesex
Volume: 1a
Page: 1067

She especially was very young in 1891, so the John W + Jessie marriage couldn't have been much before that (at which point Elsie, 1 month old in 1891, was well on the way).
