If he was retired army or marines he could well be a pensioner.

Thanks for your reply, that's what I thought it looked like,but he is only 43! which is why I thought it must be something else. Would there have been pensions at that time? I guess the only way I might find out what he actually did is to get a marriage or death cert which might show his occupation.
