GEDCOM question....?

Is there anyone who can point me in the right direction please? I have sent my tree from G.R. to my own email address. The format when I open it is not reader friendly, do I have to get a blank family tree gedcom disc and import it onto that to be able to use it?.

Thanks for reading

My thanks too, Titus. Now do I have to update my gedcom each time I add or alter my GR family tree details, or is it changed automatically?

When you import the gedcom into the program it will interpret the information in it to its own format.

The gedcom file is then redundant, well it is once you alter any of the information within the program.

When you update the information in the program it does not alter the gedcom file you had, you have to export the information from the program into gedcom again to get an updated gedcom.

Hi All

I work the other way - I input all my information into Family Tree Maker 2006 (FTM2006) and then export the tree into GEDCOM format and upload it into Genes Reunited tree online. Only problem is that my online tree is often out of date with my FTM2006 tree.

I find it much easier to use FTM2006 to enter the details about my relatives rather than the online GR tree. I have also used Personal Ancestral File (PAF) and would recommend it for free program.

Hope this helps

Thanks Deborah and Ron...Two aspirin and a lie down in a darkened room is now necessary, but yes, your messages are most helpful... who needs google?
