Searching on Ancestry - cant work out how it works

I can search up to 1920 on this site with surname and mothers maiden name so here is what I have

for the partial indexes 1837 to 1983 ............. it is far better to go to www.freebmd.org (a free site).


ancestry takes the information from this site, so it is always a little behind in the information you can find.


Go back frequently as freebmd is a work in progress as volunteers work to input all the records since September 1837.


In addition, you will not find the mmn before 1911 as it was not included in the records before then.


Another tip ........ use the county not the district for the birth place unless you are absolutely certain that the children were all born in exactly the same place. The registration district is not necessarily the same place as the birthplace!

Hi Donna.
There are 3 sections for BMD on Ancestry. The top section is easiest searched year by year.
The middle section is a partial index and only goes up to about 1912.
The 3rd section is for BMD from about 1984.

England & Wales, Birth Index: 1837-1983

It looks as if you are searching in the Partial FreeBMD Indexes. These are not complete and have very little for the 1920s.

You will need to search the Complete indexes. This can be a very slow process as you will only get an image of the index and will have to search these quarter by quarter for the relevant years. Also you have to be a member of Ancestry as these are pay to view records. Will try to find James Smith entry for you.

Unfortunately the seachable index in not complete. This means doing the long slog of a quarter by quarter search of the images on Ancestry.

I am tyring to find brothers and sisters of
James Smith born 3.3.1923 Hemsworth he had about 10! He was the youngest.
When searching on Ancestry under births Smith mothers maiden name Allott it only brings up two born in Hemsworth Ada and Nellie. Why dose it not bring up any others including James Smith when I know they are there?
