and would have lost 12 months of family research details and now be having to start again had I not been writing everything down or printing census details off.

How glad I am that I find putting info on the computer a chore and prefer paper and pen for drawing up my tree!

So even if you mainly use the computer please think about writing down the important details elsewhere (or at least make sure you put them on a disc from time to time)

My computer crashed at the beginning of September - fatal as it turned out. The local computer shop did manage to retrieve some documents but not my family tree. Thankfully I had copied to disk about two months prior to this so did not lose too much info.

Do have paper copies of all info so not too much of a task to get my tree back uptodate.

If you have a tree program on your puter, like Family tree maker you can back it up to the internet storage of ancestry for about a fiver a year, you can also back it up to a cd every time you add more info and of course send all the new info to update your homepage website. 3 places where its safe.

Hi
I have just discovered a memory stick, and I have transferred all my old photos, census records onto it. I have done summaries of each family on word and copied that all over as well..
The beauty of a memory stick you can update it anywhere that has a usb port!.
I also have my tree on Tribal pages that I can access from any computer. Password protected and you can select who you wish to visit your site and what information you allow them to see.
I have printed documents in arch lever files for each family.
I have a family tree maker software of which I back up.
I have written notebooks which I have taken to libraries.
My computer crashed early last year, and all I lost was some photos that I took on a field trip (Graves and old family homes still standing)
I will just have to go back to Eccles in Kent again
and take some more photos!.
A tip from my brother in law is, if you are going to copy onto a disc, do it on a DVD rewritable which holds a lot more memory and lasts indefinately, whereas a cd disc may only last up to 5 years and only holds 80mb.
If anyone sends you any info through e mails (photos or summaries put them into a folder on your email so you can go back to them at any time should you accidently lose any other form of storage.
Regards
Carol
.

Some very good advice. Can I add, put your photos into Picasa and upload onto their Web site. Always retrievable.

Carol, nip over to Family Tree Forum and check out the WIKI for Kent - under each county there are a list of people willing to do photos etc.
