Online access to free to view information is very limited.

There are transcripts of some GRO birth marriage and death indexes on the freeBMD website. This site also has access to the images of the GRO indexes.

A transcript of the 1881 census of England and Wales is available on the familysearch website.

Some work has been done on census transcriptions on the FreeCEN website
http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Depending on where in the country you are searching there are some regional indexes of BMD. Perhaps the best way of searching for coverage of these is via the UKBMD website
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/

Always check the relevant county GENUKI webpages for details of any transcriptions which are available online.

That should keep you busy for a while!
