hi sue my grandfather ran of to canada in 1910 .he married mabel in canada inbetween 1911and 1915 she was born in england my grandfather travelled to canada on the the 8th of october 1910 on the ionian from glasgow can you see if mabel sailed on the same ship

Hi Allan,

Have had another look....only three Fergus's (unusual name so easier) left the UK between 1890 & 1939 (only one going to Canada but wrong one) but then again numerous F Johnstone/Johnston/Johnsons. Unfortunately the exact spelling of the surname can't be relied upon. The person compiling the passenger lists would have entered it as he perceived it to be spelt.

Do you know for sure that Mabel travelled with her parents? By 1910 or thereabouts, she would have been an adult and possibly travelled alone?

its interesting but the mabel johnston who married in cockermouth in 1919 would not be mine my grandfathers wife lived in workington at the time .
as a matter of interest does it say who she married my grandfather was in the canadian army in surrey in 1919

if its any help the names of there 4 children were fergus n .john d .marion and mabel .i think they may have left about 1910 ,there name was spelt johnstone

I searched Ancestry for;
mab* johnston* 1888-1890 england
only one result and she is married

Hi Allan,

Sorry, but the names John and Mary Johnstone/Johnston are too numerous on the lists. It would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Not quite so many Mabels, but can't see her. Trouble is often just the initial and not full christian name was recorded, and there there are too many Johnstones with the initial M to search for.

i am looking for the johnstone family who left cumberland in the 1900s fot the usa or canada they were in england in the 1901 census the names are john johnstone born 1858 mary johnstone born 1861 they had 4 children not sure if all 4 sailed with them i know daughter mabel did born 1889
