Genealogy Test

This is a test which gives you a breakdown of your genetic profile. What mix you are with percentage. Northern European, Asian etc.

Would you have it?

Would you have it done if there was no way ever you would find out who your Grandad was for example just to have an idea of your origins?

It would be interesting to find out the genetic make up but I don't think the test would be worth it to find out about missing gaps in your line.

You would need a much more detailed DNA test and then there must be someone with whom to compare profiles in order that you could come up with possibilities for missing grandparents.

To find out who my Grandad is, most likely was, we would have to do tests on most of the population of Cahir Tipperary or dig up most of the old men.

I have no idea of who one of my grandad's was - my Dad has no idea who his Dad was - so I guess if the test provided any clue then yes, I'd have it.
I mean, some clue as what planet he was off would be a huge help, because when you've got nothing to go on, you can't start searching....as I've found out.

I'm considering this test because , judging by my Tocqueville inherited characteristics theres something other than North European in me. The two possibilities I have come up with are the Moors and Gypsy but who knows?

Well I am not sure exactly of the costs but believe it run into hundreds. It was brought to my attention on Who do you think you are series last year. Athlete cannot remember his name. He was colored but wondered about his features. He had the test and found he had a strong percentage of native American in his make up.

I would love to have that test, my mum has theory's like to find out if they are right or wrong.

It depends what you are looking for. Check out the different tests at
http://www.ancestrybydna.com

I notice they've introduced a new test in the past couple of months the european DNA one at $650

If you do decide to do it don't forget the Y one is for mens male line and the Mitro one is for womans female line.

I heard a radio prog. saying it costs 24 pounds to have test done in Scotland and they check 29 markers. DonĀ“t really understand but it sounds cheap to me.

I don't fully understand the tests but supposing a Caribbean link was found....would there be any indication of when that link occurred?
ie. would you know whether to start checking immigrants / seafarers in the 1900s or would it indicate a possible slave link into UK many hundreds of years before.

As far as I know the tests only check overall percentage, not linked to a timescale.

I find the whole subject fascinating though and might one day go down the DNA route because I am in now contact with someone who looks more like my sister than I do. We had the same maiden name but have so far found no link between our separate familes.

Good luck if you decide to go for it but be clear what you hope to find.

My family have just been DNA tested and the results were brilliant. It cleared up so much mystery and answered so many questions.

If you feel that you would get the results that you're looking for from this test, then go for it.
