When I was searching for my husband's great grandfather who was born in Northumberland in 1828, I spent a whole afternoon looking through parish records at the county record office, only to be told as I was leaving that a lot of people in Northumberland were non-conformist and that I might find his baptism in the non-conformist records which are separate from parish records.

The county record office have a lot of the non-conformist records transcribed and I did indeed find him in these. The baptism record was very good as it also gave his date of birth.
