Thanks Peter. That sounds more like it, I didn´t think he was that wealthy and he had A LOT of grandchildren. So we take the first figure on the index then I assume.

Still looking I think you have to put in 2006 not 2007 as this year isn´t finished yet if you know what I mean...

£5 in 1841 is worth £334 in todays money, based on the rpi., which is the most meaningful comparison.

However given that earnings were far less, its would have been more valued then than today, by someone who received it

Oh dear, I thought I´d done it right, but now I see lots of indices on the site, and I don´t understand any of it!

It is fun, but I always think the figures need to be taken with a pinch of salt as the comparison arent shown against the real economic index.

I mean, if a tenner then is worth more than £12k now then by the same token a loaf of bread for a penny then would be costing us £120 now.

My GGFx3 left some of his children £3k in 1823 and my GGMx2 £300 yet they were by no means really rich people, merely "comfortable". And GGMx2 was living in poverty by 1825.
