All is not lost. In the first place you can pursue their mothers since the later censuses should tell you where and when they were born. Then you should be able to find their baptisms in the parish registers and thus their mothers at least.

Secondly you can see if there were any bastardy orders against their fathers. The appropriate record office is the place to go for these.

Oh I see Peter thankyou, that makes it difficult then especially with the names of the fathers both not there.

The usual reason is that they were illegitimate and their fathers were unknown.

I have a marriage certificate for 1838 both were full age but no name for the fathers what would the reason be please?
