	Where was he in 1881? Its unlikely he would have learned his profession on the lakes - was he near a big port city in 1881? If so, thats the place to look for records - and/or Kew. Google for PortCities website, its very interesting. And google for master mariner - that will give you the info you want about his job.

Member Since: January 2003 Posts: 125 Send Message	Hi all, I wonder if anyone can help. I have a 3x grt Grandfather who was a master mariner on the 1881 census. Also captain of a steam boat on Windermere Lake. I have been to the Archives in Kendal, they have no info I have also telephoned windermere Library, they have no info & the steam boat museum at Bowness is closed for refurbishment. What I would like to find out is where he would have learned his trade how long it would have taken etc if anyone can point me in the right direction I would be very grateful. Thank you Lesley
