There is this death on the partially transcribed index. The year of birth is about right, but I don't know how you could tell if it was "your" Amos.

Amos Waters b.1858 at Ticehurst Kent.
Married Emily Jones at Ticehurst 1877.
He worked at Scotney Castle Lamberhurst Kent.
!901 census he was a cowman on a farm this may have been Scotney
this is the last record i have found for him.
He also worked on the Railways a porter i think but i don`t know the area or dates.
The marriage had broken up i think early 1900`s.
Grandmother Emily went to Australia early 1900`taking some of the family with her the surname was changed to Cole don`t know why i don`t think Amos went with them so i don`t think he changed his name ( they came back before the war started) what happened to Amos ??

Well, you need to narrow down the period. Obviously its unlikely he would be over 100 when he died, so that narrows it down and so on. If you gave us some solid details of what you DO know then we may be able to help.

When was he born/where/was he alive when your parents married? Who remembers the last time he was at a family gathering? Did he outlive gran? and so on.

You just have to trawl through the complete death index looking for his name with an age that would correspond at the time to his date of birth. If you have an idea of where he died it is a help, otherwise it is just a matter of finding a name and age that fits. It is easier with a more unusual name - John Smith would be a bit of a nightmare!!
