Hey guys! I desperately need help to find information about my Grandmother (born in 1941), she was adopted and I want to find out about her biological parents.

I've been told that I can't personally get a birth certificate or access any adoption papers, Is this right?

I know her (biological)mothers maiden name and that her father was an American serviceman.... I also found her in the Birth Register and wondered if the 'District', 'Vol.' and 'Page' could be any help to me?

I would appreciate any help, Thanks =)

Use the General Register Office website and you can order the cert online.

Make sure you tick the box to say you have the GRO refs and it will cost £7

Hi
Providing you know the birth name and the GRO reference you can buy on line.
You can also purchase the Adoption Certificate if you have enough details to put on the form, however, it won't give you any details of the birth parents.
You can also do this online if you live in England or Wales. If you live overseas you have to download the application form and print it off and send it by snail mail with a cheque.
Only the adoptee can access their adoption records.

I wanted details of my late husbands birth family and as I had his adoption certificate and his mothers maiden name and had been told she was unmarried at the time of his birth I was able to contact the registry office concerned and they were very helpful and sent me his birth certificate. On that, his mother seemed to have married\(but not to the father from what relatives have told me) but her maiden name was there.
I haven't taken it any further and don't suppose they would allow me to, or my children, but I'm satisfied to know who his parents were
