I've heard of "white leg", Kay. It's in one of my gran's old books and does say it can come from after childbirth because of having to stay in bed. Yet the silly author (I think they're silly, anyway) insists that the poor new mother should not get out of bed - or even sit up in bed - for the first few days after birth!

You would think they could have put two and two together and come up with the solution. (Although, I suppose they were thinking that insisting on the lying-in time would at least give the mother a rest from household responsibilities.) At the time when this book came out (c.1927) they said the mother should ideally be confined to her room for a month.

There is a Latin name for "white leg" - something "alba" but I forget the name now.

it may mean a blood clot ,,,Anue pertains to Artries,,&Blood vessles,,,
back then although they insisted in a --Laying in time,,,10--14 days,it caused what was called,,,,,,,,,,**White Leg**..where due to none movement after birth caused clotting in the legs,,,,,,,,,,these traveled to lungs/heart or brain and caused deaths,,,,,,,,,,,

Thanks for replying, some big words in there!!

Looking at it again it looks like a capital O at the beginning like Onuemonia or a small 'a' , but large (if you know what I mean) like anuemonia, so it is possible. Every time I google such a word it comes up with "Do you mean pnuemonia", think I might settle for that. Thanks for suggestion.

Pete it is definitely "during puerperium" but thanks anyway.

Hi Marilyn try this website which gives sites for archaic medical terms, you can even email and ask a doctor on one of them.

Is it this

Puerperal Exhaustion Death due to childbirth

Puerperal Fever Infection after childbirth due to poor midwifery techniques especially antiseptic measures. Infection entered through injuries to the birth canal leading to septicaemia and often to death. Occurs within 3 weeks of childbirth

I recently purchased the death certificate of my Great Grandmother who died 9 days after having my grandad in 1905. The cause of death is .........during puerperium but I cant read the first word.

It looks like ANEUMORIA or ANEUMORNIA.

Has anyone ever heard of this or any ideas of what it could be, would be really grateful.

Thanks loads

Marilyn
