Hi;
I am trying to find out about a John Rowlands, who was in the Royal Welch Fusiliers. He was born around 1808 and married to Dorah. He was from Cressage and she from Kilkenny in Ireland. The info I have found so far is; he went to Canada while in the army during the 1840's. He had 3 children while over there; 2 born in North America and 1 in Canada. I have now come to a dead end and would like to find out why he went there.

Thanks; Chris Flynn.

He went because the 23rd. RWF were posted to Canada, they were there 1841-1843.

You could try a search for his Army records at the National Archives:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp

Search on his surname and put WO where it says department or series code, you may be lucky and find they have his records, although they will not be on line and you will have to go to Kew or employ a researcher to get them for you.

Good luck.

You might find some of his army records on the National Archives website...put his name in the search and look at the army records....Royal Hospital Chelsea has the early ones.
