...it certainly could. Remember that the Egypt posting was theatre first served, thereafter you would need to dig deep in your research.

Another link and also remember to "google", for example Salonika + World War One

Best regards, good hunting, Bob

Thanks very much for your transcription of the medal card. It is even more fascinating when it is about one of your own and it explains a lot more.
My brother says that Grandad went to Salonika, does that tie in?
Thanks again

Chris, my interpretation of the medal card scan, I have put it here so that others may take an interest.

Edward G Spain AVC Private SE13065

Army Veterinary Corps, later known as Royal, therefore RAVC.

Medal entitlements are self explanatory, nevertheless, roll number and page of the three are given.
The Victory Medal awarded to all who served, the British War Medal means he served later than 1915, as he was awarded the 1915 Star he was in or saw action by that year.

As he was NOT awarded a Silver War Badge, it is very likely that he did not receive physical wounds and would have served until de-mobilised possibly 1919-20. This is also born out by the fact that there are no “remarks”.

Theatre of Operations first embarked 3 is Egypt, the code 3 was also used after 1916 for Russia, but as he was serving by 1915 Egypt is almost certainly the place he was first deployed.

He probably an enlisted or volunteered early, if he had been a serving soldier he would more than likely had been awarded the 1914 Star, often known as the “Mons Star” most of these went to the Expeditionary force and those who were or saw action in that year.

Here are two links that you should take a look at.

Yes, there was a 1915 Star. The Documentsonline site gives details on the medals and entitlement to them.

Thanks Janice
Have just looked at the sites as suggested. But it would appear that I will have to write in for any documentation.
I maybe answering my own question but do you think 15 is for 1915?

Wondered if this site might help.
If he stayed in the forces after 1921 then records are still held in army records.

Might be a daft question but I have my Grandfather (Edward George SPAIN born 1889 in Deptford) medal card which says he was in the AVC.
He received all three campaign medals and date of entry was 11.12.15.
The medals have RAVC/number next to them. I have looked that up on the site as suggested and it seems to give several countries he could have gone to.
Question 1, Is there a way I can find out which country he went to?
Question 2, what is the number on the right of the star. It is a number 15?
I have checked Ancestry but could not find him in the pension records. Where to now?

Thanks
Chris
