Thanks all,

I'm looking for maps of south leeds, specifically Wortley. I saw Old-Maps.co.uk, the maps are £10 each to download which doesn't seem too bad value for money.

I would guess that wherever you live the main library, local history archive or even bookshops would sell old OS maps - I believe that they have some in the FRC too. Greenwich area has some OS maps dating back to mid 1800s as well as later in that century. They can be useful if the street that you are searching no longer exist.

If you are looking for old maps of London then take a look at :

clicking on any one of the squares that make up the map will show you an enlargement with the streets coloured showing the "classes" of the time, ranging from the 'vicious, poor, criminal' to the 'wealthy'.

www.old-maps.co.uk covers most of Great Britain with ye olde maps which you can print off too.

Apart from those, there are maps galore on the web.

What area are you talking about? There are specialist areas with cds or maps or indeed the poverty maps of London.

Tip I have found helpful would be to come by (ebay or second hand bookshops, etc) any cheap old A/Z of towns being researched for families thro' censuses. Even tho some of the streets will not 'show', can be invaluable to spot communities, similar occupations and surnames interlinking and moving, and realise streets were often just a few yards apart. (my interest old Portsmouth)

I have bought old maps from The Beehive store on ebay. It's based in Maidstone and the service is excellent.

I've come across a website that sells old maps from the mid-19th century. I would love to buy one of these as it would be interesting to see the area my ancestors lived, but I want to be sure I'm not getting ripped off and will receive a quality product.

Has anyone else bought old maps? Are they worth it? Where is the best place to buy from?
