You do not have to book to see the written records but worth checking site to see when they are open, what days and whether or not you might need to book a fiche reader or micrifilm reader. Take proof of identity with you, both address and signature so a gas bill/driving licence. Take a notebook and pencil, no pens allowed and you are allowed to use Digiatal camera no flash so you may like to take that as you can use it on many but not all docs.

Just a few more ideas having given me some background info.

Your Devon/Cornish ancestors could indicate Ag Labs or Tin miners/Clay Pit workers as all these industries declined in early 1800's. Google for more info. London was always a great pull even back then for people looking for work. Even I came up from the Devon to the big bright lights of London!

Also remember, that as now. people married where the wife came from, so look not only for Settlement Certs for him but also for his wife. Many of mine married in villages in Hunts to return to the village in Northants to have their children. This has led me a merry dance over the Northants/Hunts/Beds/ Herts and Leicestershire borders but it has been fun finding them! Sometimes I use the CRO and sometimes I get clues from the Family History Associations before I go to the CRO.

Have you tried using the A2A site to key in your ancestor's name or keying in Hertfordsire to see what landowners were around Harpenden/St Albans at the time. I think the Russell family was in Harpenden as well as Bucks and Beds. But I may be wrong on that one. Remember your ag lab would have worked for someone, so if you can find out who he worked for then you can see if that person also had property in Somerset. This is how I have found mine travelling from Northants to London and Bucks as well as Herts.

Good luck.

Hi Janet
Thank you for your help I will look into going to the Civic centre Herts.
On the 1841 census I have Moses Warners son Francis living with his family in Harpenden Herts.
A kind gentleman helped me last year in looking up Parish records for Francis Warner and confirmed that Francis parents were Moses Warner and Elizabeth. Francis was born St Albans which is where the marriage I found was. On another branch of my tree (well a few actually) I have ancestors moving from Cornwall/Devon to London in the early 1800 to i know its possible that they moved far from home as you say though I dont want to take it for granted. I am estimating that Moses was 20-30ish when he married in 1784 so that would make his birth year 1750-60 and there is only 1 Moses that comes up and it the one in Somerset but as you say I need proof or its just that other Moses Warners havent been entered onto the site yet.
Thank you again
Kind regards Lisa

Lisa

Your last siting of ancestors in a county will be 1841 census. Have you got the family on the census and all BMD Certs back to then or are you just relying on the IGI?

The IGI is very incomplete, for example very few of my Northants ancestors are on the IGI. The only tried and trusted method to research ancestors back from 1841 census and last BMD of 1837 is to note what certs and census say and then go into Parish registers either by going to CRO or joining the Family History Association where you last definitely sited your ancestor and purchase their parish CD's.

It is not unusual for ancestors to go from one part of a country to another, but beware of popular names like Moses Warner. There will be many same name countrywide and if you suddenly jump from Herts to Somerset then you must ask yourself why. Was he in the army/navy? Was he working for a landowner? Remember most people were working on the land at this time, about 80%. He might have been a groom or a manservant? There might be a Settlement Cert for him if he did not come from that parish. The only way to find out is to go to Local Studies at Herts which is in Hertford, at Civic Centre site, good parking. You can google
HALS for more information.
If you do not do your homework properly and just rely on the IGI then you run the risk of climbing several trees which may or may not be yours. You must prove everything with Primary sources and IGI is not a primary source.

Hi Heather

I dont know what his occupation was I havent looked at the parish register I got the marriage off of family search. Moses son Francis was an ag lab and his grandson Abraham was a blacksmith so looking at that I cant really say sons followed fathers in their occupations?

Kind regards Lisa

What was his occupation? Have you seen the entry in the parish register - it may give whether he was an outsider?

Hi does anyone know where the best place for me to visit will be?
I have hit a brick wall with my WARNER ancesters. The last thing I have is a marriage for Moses Warner and Elizabeth Ross 30 Sep 1784 Abbey, St Albans, Hertford, England.

I cant find a birth for Moses Warner in St Albans and im guessing his birth year would be around 1750ish. I know there is a Moses Warner born 1750ish in Somerset??

Anyone have any ideas on how to prove Somerset Moses is my St Albans Moses?

Many thanks as always in advance for any help given.

Kind regards Lisa
