Hi Julia,

I normally add a partner as unknown unknown and then add a child.

Best wishes

Jane

Do you mean that the parents married after the birth of the child, or are you trying to add a child without a known father?

If it's the latter, then add the father as "unknown", or if it's the former, then just add the child with birth date in the usual way.

If the father of the child is unknown but the mother has married someone else, click on "add spouse" for the mother and add "unknown" for the child's father.

FTM does not require you to add a father at all - just leave blank for illegitimate children.

The database records it as a "Spouseless relationship".

You can add as many spouseless relationships as you want and record them as well as real relationships for any particular person.

The other thing to do for non-married relationships is to click on the Marriage edit button, select the general tab then open the relationship drop down. You can then select an alternative tag to "Marriage" i.e. "Friends" or "Partners"
