If the main 'tips' thread had not been deleted, due to bullying, you could have read through that.

You could read the tips threads on here. Maiden names of wives can be found from childrens birth certs - buy from GRO at £7 each.

Thats what I feared!!!

Occasionally you do get clues from other census records - a "boarder" or "visitor" who just happens to have the same surname as the woman's maiden name, or, as happened with me once, a guy living with his niece and nephew which gave a clue as to a whole new sister I knew nothing about!

But yeah, lots of searching and pot luck seem to be the norm, unless anyone else has any thoughts?

Thanks Shirley

well from the last sighting you have of them you then need to find the marriage if there is one. from possible spouses you can then search on the next census to see if a Hubby has a wife of the Christian name you know. then get a birth cert of one of the children and see if mmn is the one you need.
After 1911 the births are easier to search cos mmn is listed in the GRO records.

Its a search and search process I'm afraid.

Has anyone got any ideas as to how to go about finding people's sisters or wives in census records?

Obviously a woman's surname will change after marriage, which makes tracking sisters forward in time or wives back in time very tricky. When a sister disappears, you do not know for sure if she's died or married, and when you're trying to find a wife's maiden name where on earth do you start?!

There are a few things we try but I just want to see if anyone else has the same ideas or does something we havent thought of :-)
