The rest of the family come up as well, so I would say it is your family.

Aline Metcalf comes up on Findmypast on the 1891 but not on Ancestry, I don't have a subscription to look at the full image unfortunately.

Can't see them myself either. Some people are just not listed for whatever reason. I recently came across a whole village that wasn't listed. Not the case here I would say given that they're in Newcastle. But, there are all kinds of reasons people aren't.

Have tried the most obvious misspellings I can think of so far - Melcalf(e), Metcalf etc but no joy yet.

I was wondering if mum had remarried to become a Metcalf and would therfore appear under a different name in earlier census - there is a big gap between William and George. But if you have found them in 1881 - then I guess thats not the case.

Thanks for the info but i just wonder how they are not on the 1891 census as suggested it could have been unreadable or a missing sheet, the metcalfs seem to have lived in the ouseburn area of byker.

They are probably just very badly mis-transcribed.

can anyone give me any ideas my great grand parents edward and mary metcalf and their children edward, allina and robert, seem to be missing from the 1891 census, edward born about 1852 and mary born 1857 and lived in newcastle upon tyne he was a striker in the shipyards, I have spent hours looking in the census but that is the only year that they were missing. has anyone any idea why this could have happened.
