A bit of advice help.

I have John Simpson married 1922 aged 22 on his cert it says father is Benjamin a labourer.

I have looked on the 1901 census and can find loads of John Simpsons but only 1 with father Benjamin a gardener. The problem is he is in Cumberland and my John married in West Derby, I know people moved around, but how can I match them to me.

I have ordered a few certs for his birth but keep coming back wrong.

How can I match a John to my family or do I need to keep ordering certs.

Well he seems to be the only one that comes up on Ancestry on the 1901 census with a father called Benjamin with a birth year of 1900.

Even if you change the birth year to 1900 +/- 10 years, he's still the only one that shows up so I'd say he is probably yours.

This MAY be his birth if you haven't already sent for this and ruled it out:-

Whitehaven covers Haile which is the birthplace given for him on the 1901 census.

I have ordered this cert now but will probly wait for ages as were in another strike now.

Even with this cert how could I know 100% sure this is mine.

Another mind boggling puzzle left by the rellies.

Because of the date of the birth and marriage, it will be very difficult to be certain he is "your" John Simpson without other information about him.

Did your John have children? It is likely that if he had a daughter he may have named her after his mother (which you will be able to check against his birth certificate). Do the witnesses on the marriage certificate give any clues? As I said, in this timescale it is difficult, because you can't check on other census years. You may have to wait until the 1911 census becomes available and see if this family from 1901 can be found.

One of the witnesses was c Simpson. I think i'll check that one out.

On the 1901 census there is only the one kid, after 4 years of marriage i'll look for some more though

My advice to you is stop groping in the dark and wait until the 1911 Census, due to be released earlier than 2011. Simpson is a far too popular name,
ONS Statistics for 2002 shows that it ranks 69, Most popular Smith ranks No.1.
However, One name study methods could assist you to narrow down your search if you insist on throwing your money about. I once helped a lady called Foxton whose Ancestor was a Shepherd on the North Yorkshire moors. She gave me two names and area. This enables you to use the unique search facility on Free BMD. Find one proven ancestor and in 19th and early 20th century most others will be in same area. Go into free BMD. You say you know one ancestor, or possible, born Whitehaven. In the district box use arrow to spin district to Whitehaven. Leave County list on default ALL.
Above Births select All Types. For period set, say, March 1895 to Dec 1920. Search Surname Simpson.
Output gives all Births Marriages and Deaths in period selected. My best bet for Benjamin Simpson is the Dec 1897 marriage showing Margaret Gainford.
If you have ancestry see if a Benjamin with wife Margaret is in 1901 Census with John. If so you are getting close to a match. Note you can see Simpson children that do not get to appear in census.
As I said before system works best with rarer surnames. In my Foxton example he was the only one in that area, and his Birth, Marriage & Death plus all his offspring appeared on my printout.

If this is your John this 1901 record will assist your research.

I would think that moving from a rural area like Cumberland to a big city like Liverpool was not unusual at this time. I wondered if the family had some Liverpool roots, - maybe, but they look like they've been in Cumberland a while.

I don't think it's so unusual for people to have moved from Cumberland to Liverpool. Mine moved from St Bees, Cumberland to Everton, Liverpool. One brother moved first and the rest soon followed.
