I have two people (my 2gt and 3gt grandfathers) and there seems to be a lot of confusion over their surname.

My maiden name was Collins, but this seems to have been a spelling mistake about 1900 as before then everyone is down as Collin. The info I have on these two people is:

John Collin (name taken from list of dates written in family bible)
Died 13 Oct 1900 (date taken from bible)

1881 Census:
John Collin
Age: 52
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1829
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Martha
Gender: Male
Where born: Wigton, Cumberland, England

Civil Parish: Kirkbampton
County/Island: Cumberland
Country: England

Street address: Little Bampton (The Building)
Condition as to marriage: Married
Education:

Employment status: View Image
Occupation: Farmers Labourer

Registration district: Wigton
Sub-registration district: Wigton
ED, institution, or vessel: 18
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Abarham I. Collin 9
John Collin 52
Martha Collin 55
Martha E. Collin 12
Mary Ann Collin 13
Thomas I. Collin 10
Elizabeth Waites 2

1861 Marriage certificate:
1st Aug John married Martha Studholme in Kirkbampton Parish Church, Cumberland. (I know this is the same person as I have Marthas details in the bible) His name is down as John CULLIN, fathers name James Cullin. John is living in Nealhouses, Thursby, Cumberland in 1861 and they are both working as husbandmen.

I can find no other info on John or James except these two documents, and cant find census records for any year except 1881 for John, and none at all for James.

I have been trying alternate spellings in ancestry and have so far tried; Collin, Cullin, Collen, Cullins, Cullen and Collins.

Anyone got any other ideas on tracking them down? Thanks?

There is this James Collin in 1881 in the right area but he is unmarried and age will be too young, maybe a relation though.

Don't forget to try them with only one 'L' too. Colin, Culen, Colen etc. And remember that they can also be mistranscribed.
