I keep coming across the female name 'Johan' in my Devon lines.

Does anyone know if it would it have meant Joan or Johanne?

I know Johanna is a popular name among my Cornish ancestors, but I don't know if the same is true of Devon.

Thanks.

Well I don't know if this is right for your family, but Johan is the German equivalent of Jonathan, it would be Johanna for a girl.

I am guessing that the parents couldnt spell and so the name was written down as it sounded? So I would lean towards Joanne.

Thanks for the replies I guess I'll keep her as Johan for now!

I've also got a Garthred (female), so a Johan is the least of my problems!!!!
