Thanks Margaret and Kathleen.

Yes, I did realise that there was another Thomas but I am fairly certain this one is the one I want!

Thanks again!

I agree with what Margaret says for the occupation.

A lot of young boys and girls went into service - often because they got their keep and this helped out their parents who didn't have to feed them, so I would say the 14 year old was a servant in Thomas's household, as I would think they were comfortably off.

Engine Maker & Smith employing 5 men & 2 boys.
Incidentally I was on the wrong page at first. Do you know there is another Thomas Sabine on page 38, also an engine maker?

Hi

I am having trouble reading an occupation on the 1861 census. I can read "Engine maker" but can't read the rest of the description. I don't suppose any of you would be kind enough to have a look and help me ...?

1861 England Census > Derbyshire > Swadlincote > District 4 page 31 of 44. Thomas Sabine.

Also, they have a 14 year old servant living in their house. Would that be their servant considering his job would anyone know?

Thanks in advance

Jo
