I've looked at the 1901 census and I found Mary Eliz Pyke, b. c. 1895 Scarborough, and on the census, her mum, Mary Ann Pyke (b. c. 1869 Robin Hood's Bay, Whitby, Yorkshire) is married but there is no mention of husband on census. She also has two other children Martha Storm and Hilda Victoria.

I'm just curious as to where her husband may have been, and who he was, what he did etc...

Have you looked for a marriage for Mary Ann ??? to Mr Pyke?

What are the ages / birth years of the eldest child?
A year or so prior could be a good place to start looking for a marriage

You could use, its free

Martha's name is quite distinctive.

Her birth cert. would give some answers.

Helen

Tried that earlier - what have you tried?

Patricia

This could be the marriage

Marriages Jun 1896
Goodall Mary Ann Scarbro' 9d 584
PYKE Thomas William Scarbro' 9d 584

But as Gwyneth has pointed out - if you get the birth certificate - it should give the mother mmn and the fathers name and occupation

I will get Martha Storm Pyke's birth certificate. Believe it or not Storm is a popular name round Robin Hood's Bay, and so is Pyke. Don't know where it came from, but I'm sure I'll find out.

If Martha father is Walter and he works on ships/boats perhaps she was conceived/ born in a Storm?!?!

Helen

Helen Report 16 Oct 2007 10:29

Lol!

Thank you for finding Walter, Patricia. That does seem feasible, but will check with birth certificates.
