Kidman's row comes up easily in 1911 - you can easily find all the families there, but of course would need to look at original to be able to place it.
Have you looked for his family in 1901 just to see if they happen to be there?

Hi Andrea - looking up 'Kidman' in St Ives Cambs, there is a Kidman's farm - and Kidman & Sons builders - established 1876!

They may have an idea where Kidman's Row was - you'd lose nothing in contacting them!

Hi just reading your posts. I read with interest as my great grandfather was too born in the Union Workhouse in Hemingford Grey, Cambs. A lot of my people in my tree originated from Filberts Walk, St Ives a row of terraced houses in between St Ives and Hemingford Grey, Cambs. The Union Workhouse was in fact just a stones through from both these places. I am not aware of a Kidmans Row though, did you manage to find out where it was?

Thanks all.

That is really helpful. I've now checked on the 1901 census and nothing seems to be coming up. I think the museum is right, it probably changed its name.

I'll look into the local history society, thanks. May have to wait for the 1911 census!

Go to the 'official' 1901 census (google for link) and you can search for an address.

You could at least find out if the address existed in that year.......

Hi Andrea

You can look up addresses on the 1901 census on Ancestry but it is quite longwinded.

There is an address search on the census on the National Archives site (Google 1901 census). I have checked but nothing is coming up)

Sorry for yet another question!

My grandfather's birth certificate states that he was born in 1911 in Kidman's Row, St Ives, Cambs.

This address no longer exists but I have been wondering where it was. I have contacted my local museum to see if they have any old maps but they have told me that this probably won't help because these little rows and alleyways changed their names regularly (it was probably a row of houses owned by someone called Kidman – when he sold them, they will have been called someone else’s row) and so the names aren’t marked on maps.

He says that Kidman's Row doesn't appear on the 1881 and 1891 censuses but suggests "If you’re able to get a look at the 1901 census (1911 isn’t available yet of course) you might find the address there, and its position in the list of streets will give you at least some idea of where in the town it may have been."

Do you know how I look up addresses on a census? Would I have to look at the actual records rather than the online versions?

Thanks in advance.
