Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. Will take all suggestions on board and try to delve further. Seems that a trip down south from the North of Scotland is the best way to get more info. Was hoping to get it all on line!!

His Royal Navy Records up to 1922 will be found at TNA Kew. I do not think that the service records are online but you could check the following website for further information:

www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Any medal entitlements for W War 1 will be online. Only if he died during one of the wars will he be on the CWGC site but his death may be recorded in the naval section of the overseas BMD which used to be at the FRC in London and is now digitised on Findmypast. If he left the navy after 1918 then his death will be recorded on the GRO.

All service records and that includes the Navy after 1922 are still with the MOD, and you will need to write to Portsmouth for these records. To do this, you will have to complete a form and be able to provide proof of next of kin + a cheque for £30.

If you live near Kew it is easy enough to research these records up to 1922, as I have done so.

Try the A2A site - or National Archives. I've found several RN records on there.

You could read the information on the documentsonline site, which tells you what is available and for when.

Still looking for advice on how to search for WW1 Royal Navy Record. Previously received info. from West Country Lass about a Michael Hayes, Service Number 290877, but this is not correct relation as he was not married to the person named and place of birth was Passage West, Co. Cork. I have checked the CWGC site but no trace and also National Archives site.

He was deceased sometime between 1914 and 1927 - where would his death be registered if it was "in service"? He was a Stoker Royal Navy 1911, Stoker Petty Officer on HMS Nymph 1914. First wife called Lily, remarried to Jane 1914. Can't understand why his Royal Navy record can't be found.

Anyone got any ideas? Thank you!
