Thankyou both Ann and Uncle John. Having a childless marriage G. led a double life having 4 children with my grandmother in Horsham. His will left all to eldest illigitimate daughter, hence 2 surnames.

I found this on the .british-genealogy web site
"
If he's a Wesleyan minister then you need to get to look at a copy of Hall's Arrangement. Finding someone in this book is a bit like finding someone on the census in that you have to trawl through it and it helps to know where the person lived and worked. It only contains Wesleyan ministers and is indexed in circuit name order. Each circuit then has a list of the ministers who served there and the dates when they did so. It therefore tells you where each minister lived and worked if you search through. There are therefore quite a number of references to any one minister dotted through the book as Methodist ministers moved around a lot.

If he's a United Methodsit Minister or a Primitive Methodist Minister then you might find him in Hill's Arrangement (a different book) which contains lists of Wesleyan, United and Primitive Methodist ministers.

If he's a Local Preacher or a lay church office holder then you need to know where he lived. If you do then you might be able to find references to him on the preaching plan or in the minutes of the quarterly trustees meeting etc. Finding these depends on how good the chapels were at keeping their records safe. They're sometimes kept at the local archives. If you're lucky enough to find him in these then you might get some idea of his views and priorites (depending on how the secretary recorded information) but be prepared for a long search.

A 'Select list of libraries and archives with Methodist holdings' can be found on the Methodist Heritage site at -

Highly unlikely that there's a register. You may find that the old minute books etc. from the Circuit Meeting have been deposited at the County Archives. Hopefully the archives have an online index of what they hold. Methodist Churches are supposed to pass on old records to the Archives.
