Quite a few children were baptised in their homes - often when their health was bad after birth. Sometimes they would be later baptised in the church - shown as "Received into church/parish)

Thanks - I thought Ellen/Nellie were interchangeable. My granddad always called her Nel.

Not two faiths, Capricorn, as both are in the same church. I reckon it must be a confirmation that has somehow been transcribed into the baptisms.

I have a great aunt who was christened Esther Ann but known as Cissie.
My dad's sister told me it started out as 'sister'.
I have another great aunt who was known as Dolly but her real name was Mary Elizabeth.

My g grandmother was ellen but was called nellie

It maybe because although she was chiristened as a baby,,,,it may be her first time back for her marriage,or there would be a new vicar or priest with different views ,,,,,,,,,,,
was any of her children christened about the same time?

Yes Ellens was callled Nell,Nellie,,,,and also Nan,,,,,,

I wonder if anyone can help. My grandmother appears to have been christened twice. Once shortly after she was born and then again as an adult (at the same church). The adult christening says "Welcomed into the church"

I'm wondering if the first christening may have actually taken place at her home - perhaps she was ill and thought unlikely to live? Or does the expression "Welcomed into the church" mean something else? A confirmation perhaps?

Either way she has two different christian names as well. Ellen and Nellie - is Nellie a pet name for Ellen?
