Elizabeth,
You cannot open a GED com file unless you have a genealogy software programme on your computer.
There are many around, some Free and some which you have to buy. If you havn't got a large tree yet, then you could download a free programme.and practice getting used to it. They are all differant in the way that they look on your screen. The only one which is exclusively British is
http://www.family-historian.co.uk/
where you can see a comparison chart.

Support site (brilliant)
http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi
.....where you can also buy the programme through Amazon
The other site you could go to ,to see what other researchers use/think
is this link

Happy hunting Jane

I have my main tree on Ancestry because it is such a brilliant site, i also have a tree on Genes...which i need to make contact with others searching same surnames as me.I also have family tree maker but when i looked earlier over 100 names differed from each site. So upload gedcoms & import & export them ......so now all 3 trees have the same family members but only have to enter them on one tree Ancestry.
A year ago when i started i could hardley connect to the internet....Hope for us all

Dont know about the shared trees question but the answer to the second one is that you can only transfer the tree from GR into a family tree program. Most of us have our info on our computer on a separate tree program as its much more flexible. For only a tenner you can buy the very serviceable Family treemaker 2006 from twr computing on line plus 14 days free ancesty. You could then have the facility to back up to cd, to the internet storage and to produce an internet home page which your friends and rellies could access from their computers.

If you just want a freebie, go to familysearch.org and download the PAF program.

You can then import your GR tree into it.

A gedcom is the file with your tree info on it - you need to import your info from a gedcom which GR will send you attached to an email. Just follow the instructions, which are very simple - from the site here.

Hi, I thought I was doing okay building my family tree until I started to read the tips board and realised
1.what a novice I am and
2 . that I have been far too gullible about accepting everything I have discovered as correct.
Anyway , I have learned lots by reading all of the info on here so thankyou. Two basic questions, firstly is there a quick way to transfer the info from shared trees onto mine? Secondly if I copy my family tree from Genes R onto my hard drive do i put it in a Gedcom file [ whatever that is] , will I still have copy here on Genes R?
